Thank you for your interest in your neighborhood park. This cleanup day will be for…well, we’re not quite sure yet. There are seemingly endless lists of things to do, and we can’t wait to get started on them all.

Right now is a good time to pull-up privet (an invasive plant that thankfully comes out of the ground pretty easily). Right now is a good time to pull the remaining tires out of the park and finish cleaning up the dumping sites. Right now is a good time to define where the trails are and perform simple trail maintenance.

Right now we need the hands, backs, legs, eyes, and minds of as many people as possible to do whatever possible. No skill level is required, no prior experience with the park is needed, no green thumbs are necessary. The more people we have, the more we can get done.

March 10 will also be the day when the Friends of Collins Park will receive the Collins Park Master Plan notebooks produced by ParkPride from all of the community input collected these past few months. We’d like for you to be there for this wonderful occasion and to share your thoughts and ideas with us about how you would like us to proceed. I can’t think of anything that we don’t need right now, so any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

March 10’s Cleanup Day will start from the Spink Street entrance to the park. We’ll begin gathering at the entrance at 8:45. Someone will always be at this entrance to meet with people and direct them to someone to work with, so please feel free to arrive as soon as you can and to stay for as long as possible!

Again, we appreciate your interest in Collins Park and your willingness to donate a few hours on a Saturday to your neighborhood park. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to email us at:

We Look Forward to Seeing You!

hi all,

We will be having a clean-up day at Collins Park this Saturday, Dec 2, from 9-1 or so. It seems people have begun dumping there again, so we also should discuss some strategies for keeping such folks OUT of the park.

Please meet at 9 am on the Hollywood side of Spinks St, follow it until you get to a pile of logs meant to keep people froom going furhter (but which have apparently been chainsawed!). If you come late, walk down past the logs about 100 yards and we will be down the ridge to your left picking up trash.

Thanks, hope you can make it!

There is a meeting this Saturday, November 18, at 2 PM at the Agape Center
on Bolton Road to discuss the preliminary options for Collins Park.

We will look at some of the ideas that were generated during previous
meetings. We hope to see you there.

SPINK COLLINS PARK
Park Visioning
Steering Committee Meeting
September 13, 2006
Meeting Notes

Community Members Present: Marc Pietrzykowski, Tim Millican, Jessa Boutte, Tierson Boutte, Heather Coker, Lee Coker, Karyn Hudson
Park Pride Staff: Walt Ray

Participants gathered at West Side Pizza and were given packets containing the evening’s agenda, meeting notes from the previous meeting, a finalized schedule, a packet of 20 flyers for distribution (questionnaires), and a map of the neighborhood illustrating where flyers need to be distributed.

Walt Ray began the meeting with a round of introductions and a brief recap of the schedule that was discussed at the previous meeting. The Agape Center has agreed to host our Design Workshop and our Preliminary Design Presentation. The location for the Final Public Meeting (Jan. 13, 2007) is still to be determined. Possible locations include The Collins Church. The Agape Center is not available for use for Steering Committee meetings.

Each Steering Committee member is to attempt to discuss the future of the park with at least ten neighbors. Each Committee member chose a territory (street or streets) to cover with questionnaires. The goal is to engage at least ten neighbors in conversation and document what the individual wants in the park. Committee members will leave the cut-off piece with the schedule with survey participants. Committee members will also document gender, approximate age, and estimated race for each person surveyed. These will be done on a separate piece of paper, which was also distributed. That way, nobody will know which demographic said what, but the group will know in general what demographics were covered by the survey.

Tierson Boutte will translate the survey into English for distribution at: the Iglesia de Carnicera and other Spanish speaking locations in the neighborhood. Walt Ray will e-mail Tierson the file. After translation by Tierson, Walt will print 100 copies for distribution into the community.

Ashley Harris was volunteered to post the survey on the Park View HOA web site. The Riverside neighborhood and the Bolton/Adams Crossing neighborhoods will be attended by various Steering Committee members and flyers distributed.

The ‘Kick Off’ meeting (on Saturday, September 23rd) was planned. Various Committee members took charge of various tasks to prepare for that. The meeting is seen as a cook out with hotdogs, soft drinks, and a light meal. Because it is outdoors, the meeting will be very casual. Dogs are welcome. The back up location is at the parking lot of the Agape Center on Bolton Road.

The next Steering Committee will be on Wednesday, October 11th at 7PM, West Side Pizza.

SPINK COLLINS PARK
Park Visioning
Steering Committee Meeting
Kick-Off Meeting
July 26, 2006
Meeting Notes

Community Members Present: Marc Pietrzykowski, Terry Ozanich, Jessa Boutte, Heather Lyon, Glenn Lyon, Lee Roker, Heather Roker, Wes Finger, Ashley Harris, William Curtis Dobson
Park Pride Staff: Walt Ray, Nandita Godbole, Teela James, Kalle Butler

As participants approached the meeting, they were asked to sign-in and were given folders containing: Park Pride flyer, Park Visioning overview, Steering Committee Responsibilities, Park Inspection Form, Scope of Work, business card for Walt Ray, and the meeting agenda.

Walt Ray began the meeting with a round of introductions. It was announced that Spink Collins Park had been chosen of six applications received this year. An overview of Park Visioning was given, describing the process, the commitments of Steering Committee Members, and Scope of Work. Specifically, the Steering Committee Responsibilities were discussed in detail and reasons for the importance of maintaining an active team were mentioned.

Funding options were discussed. There is no current funding for any projects in Spink Collins Park. Some success stories were outlined from other Visioning Parks and it was noted that once a community has a Conceptual Master Plan, it is well positioned to compete for available funds from a variety of public and private sources.

It was obvious that the demographic at the Kick-off meeting does not accurately reflect the demographic make-up of the neighborhoods that the park serves (Bolton Neighborhood and Riverside Neighborhood). Ways to correct this discrepancy were discussed. Potential ideas include a one-call, announcing at the two neighborhood association meetings, approaching community leaders and churches, and posting flyers at businesses frequented by local residents, and expanding the area where flyers were distributed. This will be discussed in further detail at the next meeting.

A regular meeting time and date were scheduled. The regular Steering Committee Meeting time will be on the Second Wednesdays of each month at West Side Pizza, 7:00 PM.

The next Steering Committee will be on Wednesday, August 9th at 7PM, West Side Pizza.

The next clean-up will be Saturday, April, 22 from 9 AM until 4 PM. (Friends of Collins Park will buy lunch for anyone cleaning at lunch time.)

We have water, garbage bags, bug spray, and gloves. You might want to bring gloves of your own if you have them.

We meet at the Spink Street entrance, which is at the end of Spink Street off Holloywood Rd going away from Bolton Road towards the new subdivision.

If the barriers have not been moved from the end of the road, please park on the right side of the road so we can get the bobcat (and any cars) around the left side of the barrier.

Please come and lend your hands and your back for any amount of time you can spare on Saturday.

I'd suggest dressing in layers with long pants and boots as this is dirty work and the bugs are starting wake up!

We've made an incredible amount of progress and need to keep the momentum going.

If you have any questions, please send us email at

Round 1 went so well that we're scheduling round 2 for Saturday, December 10 from 9 AM until 12:30 PM.

We have gloves, bags, and water and are assembling at the end of Spink Street and walking up the road to the clean-up site.

If you can't commit to whole time period, please come for any time you can spare. (With the early quitting time, you can still get home before the games get started or finish up your holiday shopping!)

We had 8 people and a bobcat for round 1 and moved more than 200 tires from the bottom of the ravine to the street.

The bobcat will be making a return appearance for round 2 and if we have more people, we'll be able to clear more tires and work on some of other trash as well. Hope to see you there!
